Richard McBride Elementary Mural - 2017
On Spring of 2017, Richard McBride School received notice that two portables would be coming in due to the need to reduce class sizes. One of the students in my grade 5 class had mentioned she would love to make a mural somehow, and so when we proposed this to the principal, she suggested us paint the two portables when they arrived. This was a good thing; upon arrival, these portables were an unpleasant gray, and blocked the view from the front of the school, making it a huge eyesore.
We asked the city to quickly give it a coat of a fun, sky blue, which would serve as the base for the mural. The principal suggested for us to depict New Westminster, making up for the view we had lost. I designed a few drafts of happy, child-friendly cityscape, and once the design was chosen, I worked with every class from kindergarten to grade 5 in order to complete the mural. The painting with the kids took three days to complete.
The mural made the area outside the school even happier than before the portables arrived, and everyone loved the final product.
