Woodlands Secondary Sparks Mural - 2015
The Sparks Mural at Woodlands Secondary was my first Sparks project with students while I was still on my practicum. Thankfully, I had a wonderful practicum sponsor, Jean Kloppenburg, who loves the arts as much as I do. This project involved the whole school, from grades 8 to 12. We worked in cross-curricular fashion, involving the RCMP and their drug prevention. Every grade 8 student was required to create a tile as part of their Health and Career final grade; every student in art class, from grades 9 to 12, were also required to work on a tile as one of their projects. As we had 168 tiles, the project was also open to any other student in school who wanted to participate. Before hanging, select tiles were curated and displayed together with other artwork in a city-wide school sharing gallery opening. In the end, students were energized and extremely proud of the work they did, and were often able to recognize each other's tiles based on their depicted Spark.
The mural's final size was 7' X 24'.
